Job Title – Occupational Health and Safety Specialist – Ref:2015-020

Sunwest Aviation has an opportunity available for an Occupational Health and Safety Specialist within our Safety department.  Reporting to the Director of Safety, this position is responsible for performing the duties and responsibilities which include, but are not limited to, the following:

 

  • Develop strategies, plans and actions that enable the implementation of existing or updated corporate OHS processes and systems in a manner that fosters commitment and participation, models desired culture, integrates diverse interests and opinions, and delivers the intended outcomes.

 

The successful candidate should possess the following qualifications and competencies.  In addition, personality profiling will be required of all candidates granted an interview for this position.

 

  • Proactively support the on-going development of company-wide occupational health and safety polices, strategies and plan to promote the health safety and wellness of all employees.
  • Provide corporate guidance and coaching to management and staff who are responsible for OHS oversight. 
  • Provide expert advice to all employees on health and safety legislation, policies and practices.
  • Assist managers in the development of best practice processes and procedures.
  • Ensure that health and safety policies, processes and procedures are appropriately documented, remain current and relevant, and are available to all employees.
  • Conduct periodic assessments and audit activities to verify conformance with internal OHS management systems and regulatory compliance.
  • Recommend measures to help protect workers from potentially hazardous work, methods, processes or materials.
  • Investigate accidents to identify causes and to determine how such accidents might be preventable in the future.
  • Risk assess hazards and assist in development of appropriate mitigations.
  • Inspect and evaluate workplace environments, equipment and practices in order to ensure compliance with safety standards and government regulations.
  • Conduct safety training and education programs and demonstrate the use of safety equipment.
  • Provide new employee health and safety orientations and develop material for these presentations.
  • Facilitate development of collaborative Job Hazard Analyses.
  • Investigate health related complaints and inspect facilities to ensure they comply with public health legislation and regulations.
  • Coordinate “right-to-know” programs regarding hazardous chemicals and other substances.
  • Conduct audits of hazardous waste storage, destruction and participate in hazardous waste investigations.
  • Maintain inventories of hazardous materials and wastes and ensure that materials are handled properly.
  • Manage client safety standards and occupational health and safety subscriptions to ensure ratings remain strong.
  • Develop necessary program elements and ongoing program facilitation to ensure adherence to COR requirements.
  • Monitor and evaluate the effectiveness of current programs and strategies.
  • Participates in the coordination of external audits and assessments of the OHS Program.
  • Proactively researches OHS trends and leading practices for continuing improvement of the system.
  • Ensure that all required documentation for the OHS program is complete and in good order.
  • Monitor and report to the DOS system component performance and KPI metrics.
  • Other related duties as may be assigned.
  • Occupational Health Safety Diploma or Degree
  • Degree in Industrial Organizational Psychology and asset Four years’ experience in OHS program management Expert knowledge of, and ability to apply exemplary practices in the area of health, wellness and safety.
  • Expert knowledge of applicable OHS regulations.
  • Expert knowledge of Dangerous Goods and WHIMIS regulations and requirements
  • Excellent proficiency in the use of Microsoft Office programs and Visio.
  • Experience in Quality Assurance and Process design and asset.
  • Familiarity with Aviation organizations is an asset.
