Churchill Downs, the world’s most legendary racetrack, has conducted thoroughbred racing and presented the Kentucky Derby continuously since 1875.

The Kentucky Derby takes place on the first Saturday in May every year (May 4, 2019). It is the longest continually held sporting event in America, and it is one of the most prestigious horse races in the world.

We have several jets that can get you from Calgary to Louisville in under four hours and the closest airport to the Kentucky Derby is the Louisville International Airport (KSDF), which is a seven minute drive to the race track. Quick Facts about the Race:

  • The Kentucky Derby is a top rank, Grade I stakes race for three year old thoroughbred horses.
  • The race distance is one and one-quarter miles long (10 furlongs)
  • It is run on the dirt racetrack at Churchill Downs in Louisville, Kentucky.
  • Colts and geldings in the race carry 126 pounds (57 kg), and fillies in the race carry 121 pounds (55 kg).
  • 20 horses compete, which is a larger field size than most horse races; on average 8 horses race against one another.

Friday, May 3: Kentucky Oaks
The Longines Kentucky Oaks is America’s most lucrative race for 3-year old fillies (female horses). The race is held each year on the day before the Kentucky Derby and is a $1 Million Grade 1 stakes race.
