Why private aviation works well for pets

Private aviation keeps pets close, reduces touchpoints, and gives you control.

  • In-cabin travel: Your pet rides with you, not in cargo.
  • Flexible timing: Depart and arrive when it suits feeding and exercise windows.
  • Quiet boarding: Private facilities and fewer crowds make it easier on anxious animals.
  • Tailored setup: Sunwest can arrange for comfort that respects both aircraft interior and pet needs.

The process: how pet travel works on a private jet

When you book with Sunwest, we’ll guide you through the essentials.

  1. Tell us about your pet early. We’ll confirm aircraft suitability and any cabin setup required.
  2. See your veterinarian. Ensure your pet is healthy and up to date. For international trips, some destinations require a microchip, rabies vaccination, parasite treatments, and a recent health certificate.
  3. Confirm documentation for your route. International rules vary by country and can be different from rules for coming back to Canada.
  4. Cabin etiquette. Most pets remain leashed or in a carrier during taxi, takeoff, and landing. A familiar blanket or bed helps them settle.

Entering the United States with pets

When travelling privately from Canada into the United States with a pet, it is important to understand and comply with the official requirements. The following resources provide the most up-to-date guidance:

Sunwest Aviation recommends that pet owners review these resources carefully and ensure all documentation is prepared prior to travel.

Dogs coming from Canada to the U.S.

As of August 1, 2024, the CDC’s dog import rules apply to all dogs entering the United States. For a dog that has been only in dog-rabies-free or low-risk countries for the prior 6 months (Canada qualifies), you need:

  • A CDC Dog Import Form (completed online before arrival; the receipt can be reused for multiple entries within 6 months as long as the departure country remains low risk).
  • The dog must appear healthy, be at least 6 months old, and be microchipped.
  • Entry is permitted at any U.S. port.

Under this low-risk scenario, no rabies vaccination certificate is required by CDC, though vaccination is recommended and state or local rules may require it.

If your route or recent travel includes a high-risk country for dog rabies in the last 6 months, additional steps apply. Depending on vaccination status and where vaccination occurred, you may need a USDA-endorsed certificate, rabies serology from an approved lab, and arrival through a port with a CDC-registered facility reservation for inspection or quarantine.

Cats entering the U.S.

The CDC does not require proof of rabies vaccination for cats, but vaccination is recommended and cats are subject to inspection. States or local jurisdictions may impose their own rules. If a cat appears ill, a veterinary exam at the owner’s expense may be required on arrival.

Quick check: U.S. rules focus on the last 6 months of travel history. If your pet visited a high-risk country in that window, requirements change.

Typical destination requirements outside the U.S.

Every country sets its own rules, but most authorities commonly require:

  • Microchip that meets ISO standards
  • Proof of rabies vaccination within a specified timeframe
  • Recent veterinary health certificate (timing varies by country)
  • Tapeworm or tick treatment for certain destinations
  • Import permits or pre-approvals in select jurisdictions

Good practices when flying private with pets

  • Exercise before departure. A good walk reduces restlessness.
  • Go light on meals. Offer a normal meal a few hours before departure and keep fresh water available.
  • Pack familiar items. A known bed or blanket helps pets settle.
  • Carry a “pet kit.” Leash, carrier, waste bags, absorbent pads, wipes, and a spare collar tag.
  • Plan temperature and tarmacs. We coordinate cabin temps and minimize outdoor exposure at hot or cold destinations.
  • Have documents handy. Keep printed and digital copies of CDC receipts, health records, vaccinations, and microchip details.

What to avoid

  • Skipping paperwork. Missing forms can delay or deny entry.
  • Feeding right before wheels-up. It increases the chance of motion sickness.
  • Assuming rules are the same everywhere. Requirements differ by country and sometimes by state or province.
  • Last-minute planning. Late routing changes can trigger different import rules.
